To create this piece we interviewed individuals and asked them to recount personal memories as we recorded their shadows, leaving a sense of anonymity. By masking their physical identity, the piece fosters an environment in which the participants can recall memories that have influenced their lives significantly. These recorded memories are experienced through a multi-media piece that incorporates, sound, projected imagery, and moving fabric to simulate the fluid sensation of memory itself. This intimate space envelops the viewer, creating a literal and metaphorical skin, which challenges the viewer to shed their notions of self to embrace the participant’s history, in the hopes of enlightening their identity.

While creating the video, [Re]inhabited: Cabins of the Los Alamos Scientists, I lived in the cabins that were formerly inhabited by the scientists who created the first atomic bomb. Within the piece, I projected footage of the construction and detonation of the bomb as well as the resulting effects on the Japanese people and infrastructure on exterior and interior portions of the scientist’s cabins. This piece seeks to create a psychological space in order to reevaluate, illuminate, and question the intellectual endeavors of these scientists. Who were these scientists? What emotional weight do these spaces contain? |
