<image:title>Work - Three Strikes: The Crime of being a Black Man in America</image:title>
<image:caption>Artist’s Statement: Over the last two decades states across the U.S. have implemented criminal legislation under the slogan of “Three Strikes and You’re Out”. The policies emerged with a larger trend to crack down on crime in America and sought to establish more severe punishments for repeat offenders. The policies began under the symbolic notion that, just like baseball, each individual gets three chances to get it right. When translated into legal ordinances, it was meant to ensure that by an individual's’ third felony, the prison system would guarantee a severe sentence -- putting many designated “repeat offenders” away for life. However, as racial biases continue to plague the criminal justice system, “three-strikes” is taking on a new meaning. It has been projected that the lifetime likelihood of imprisonment for black men born in 2001 is one in three. [1] This means that if the US continues on this projected course, “one of every three black teenage boys can expect to go to prison in his lifetime” when compared to one of every seventeen white boys, the projections reveal a grave racial disparity in the US justice system. I plan to visually represent this statistic on a large scale by using fingerprints as the representation of individuals -- altering the color every third impression to represent the projected individual that will go to prison in this lifetime. Fingerprints have existed as a way of identifying, documenting, and classifying individuals since the 19th century. Early anthropologists originally thought fingerprint patterns could carry the information of an individual's heredity, ethnicity, and race. Today we have come to understand fingerprints as individual identifiers that they are virtually devoid of racial information. However, as fingerprint databases obtain the majority of their data from processing incarcerated individuals (which are overrepresented with minorities), the prints logged in our database are not necessarily devoid of such information. Here, the individualized nature of the fingerprint is lessened as we begin to picture patterns emerging in the data bases. In this piece, a single print will represent an individual and stand true to the idea that our prints are entirely unique. However, from a distance, the prints will merge to create a larger pattern -- demonstrating trends in the US prison system.</image:caption>
